As president of Madison College, Dr. Daniels has led the college in creating and implementing a shared governance environment, reshaping how the college responds to the unique needs of the communities it serves, guiding the transformation of an institutional culture that respects open dialogue and shared decision making, and fostering an environment that values and supports equity and inclusion with students and the college’s workforce.
Dr. Daniels led a successful campaign to construct the Goodman South Campus on Madison’s South side that brings access to educational and community resources to an area with substantial poverty, underemployment and unemployment. The creation of the Early College STEM Academy, a partnership with the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD), will facilitate learning for 200 high school junior and seniors in a full-immersion STEM dual credit program leading to an AA or AS degree to be received at the same time students attain their high school diploma. The Goodman South Campus opened for the fall, 2019 semester. Under his direction, Madison College will also develop numerous academies with the multiple school districts served by Madison College. During his tenure the buildout of Madison College’s campuses was completed, the Corporate Training Center established, Madison College’s STEM Center and the Entrepreneur Center created, and the Center for Equity and Transformational Change was established.
Dr. Daniels has more than 30 years of higher education experience, ranging from community and technical colleges to graduate institutions. In addition to serving nearly 25 years as a community or technical college president, he has held several positions of distinction, including psychology professor; associate dean of math, science and physical education; dean of instruction; and vice president of academic affairs. In addition to being named one of the most influential African Americans in Wisconsin by Madison 365, in early 2019 he received the Phi Theta Kappa Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction. Also in the spring of 2019, Dr. Daniels was named a recipient of the Eagle Award. This award, presented by the Instructional Services Administrators of the Wisconsin Technical College System, recognizes success in leadership with the tenets of desire to excel, to imagine, to create and to try. He was named to receive one of the 2019 Distinguished Community Awards from the Madison Links and has been recognized with the President’s Award from the Urban League of Greater Madison. Along with his numerous awards, Madison College received the Eduardo J. Padron Award for Institutional Transformation. Dr. Daniels has a Ph.D. from the Wright Institute Graduate School of Psychology in Berkeley, Calif.
Dr. Daniels continues to advance a college leadership model that is inclusive, respectful of diversity and practices equity in all forms and empowers individuals to lead within their scope of influence. An equally important mainstay of Dr. Daniels’ vision is the engagement with communities to provide strategies and assistance that impact community development.
